Two Perspectives of Surfing and Painting Waves

Surf Paintings / Shawna Moore

I can’t think of a better way to describe what I am hoping to convey in my paintings than to show you these two images that were sitting on my desktop screen.

When I first glanced at them, I couldn’t tell which was the photo of surfing in southern Nicaragua or the image of recently placed painting titled Palisades.

This painting was an early creation in the group of art for my “Wayfarer” exhibition at Gallery MAR last year. It was painted from memory and from the heart rather than using a photo reference.

This January, while taking my annual winter journey to Central America I was captured on a wall of water at Playa Colorado surfing the Panga Drops.

Believe me, painting is easier than surfing! I love this sport which I took up when I turned 50 but at times I am so “over my head” and scared but it makes me feel alive. What I love most is when I am given another example of how life imitates art and art imitates life.

What I wish for us all is for an easing of travel restrictions and a safe return to a life of exploration! In the mean time, I am busy at work in my Whitefish, Montana studio.

Please stay tuned for updates as I prepare for my summer exhibition at Gallery MAR Carmel in California.

There may even be some surfing on the way to deliver the paintings! (Currently Palisades is on her own journey and next month I hope to share that process and another perfect placement from Gallery MAR).
