THE SIMPLICITY OF THE WORKBOOK

Part of the motivation to change up the studio routine is prompted by my annual trips to warmer locations like Costa Rica and Nicaragua to surf and even week-long truck camping trips where I am limited to just my workbook, a couple brushes and paper plates of wet paint.

I concentrate on using water media in a small format and explore new ideas.

I recently completed a series of small works which do not lend themselves to translation using the encaustic process. I’ve tried to get the wax to bend to my vision but deep inside I am feeling there is a better way to paint these ideas and express this mood.

They feel light and filled with air.

Will I be able to translate these subtle impressions of color gradation, horizon line, and hints of daybreak and dusk?

I can’t think of a better place than perched on the shores of Kaneohe Bay with the trade winds gently blowing on my cheeks.
